Ok, if you wanted to know about one area that I discuss more than any other it is communication.
While this might seem like a simple topic, I find that it is probably the thing that humans do less successfully than any other activity. It would seem that it is as simple as I talk, and you listen. Well, that is not communication. That is just making noise. After all, if something makes a noise we listen to it. That does not mean that it communicated to us.
Even if a mechanic asks you what is wrong with your car and you start to make strange noises to describe it, it takes an understanding mechanic to know what the noise means.
As a leader, knowing what you want to be accomplished may seem clear in your head, but if you try to explain it to someone else and you see a blank expression, there is a problem. If this is a common occurrence then you may want to focus on honing your communication skills.
Being able to clearly describe and sell a vision is extremely important. After all, if you can’t relate your vision to your team, you won’t all be working towards the same goal.
Leading a team and creating a productive environment depends on communication.
This week’s experiment: Are you just making noise or are you communicating?
